Do you use this space only for your business, on a regular basis?

It must also be your main place of business, a place where you meet clients, or a separate building. Employees can’t take this deduction. A daycare, inventory storage, shared space or a space that changes size needs a different calculation.

Measure length × width. For example, a 10 × 15 foot room is 150. Only space used regularly and only for business counts. The simplified method allows at most 300.
Business income minus all your other business costs. For example, 60,000. The deduction can’t be more than this.
Count a month only if you used the space for business on 15 days or more. For example, 12.
Do you want to compare with your actual home costs?

The simplified method is $5 per square foot, up to $1,500. The actual-cost method deducts the office share of your real home costs and often gives more for a large or costly home. We show both and which one wins.
